The article is based on the original publication of the author in the weekly Znattia in 1924 ‘How did the Civil War affect the distribution of plants and animals in Ukraine and Russia?’ The article is the first review in the history of Ukrainian biota research of the impact of war and hostilities on the distribution of species that are now classified as alien, and, in particular, polemochores. Examples are given of changes in the ranges and abundance of a number of plant and animal species, in particular due to the decline in agricultural activity and plant protection systems, reduced hunting pressure, transport dispersal and other factors associated with the ‘movement of large masses of people.’ Among the consequences are not only changes in geographic ranges and abundance of species, but also changes in behaviour, harmfulness, migration routes, and the occupation of untypical habitats. |
