abstract

A significant part of the research at the Department of Zoology of Kharkiv University was devoted to the ecology and biology of small mammals. In particular, the species diversity, distribution, reproduction, feeding of small mammals, and methods of controlling them were studied. Mammals of artificial plantations, forest edges, protective strips, arid areas, irrigated and afforested plots were investigated. Another research direction was the study of natural foci of infectious diseases in rodent populations, in particular the natural foci of tularaemia. For many years, the theriological direction at the department focused on the study of steppe mammals, particularly the marmot, both in theoretical and practical aspects. Nature conservation projects and reintroduction technologies were developed. A significant contribution to the study of mammals was made by the staff of the Group for Applied Ecology Problems of the Research Institute of Biology and the university’s Museum of Nature.
