This article examines the history of the creation and development of the museum’s mammal collections over the last 160 years. The collection contains both fossil and recent specimens. A significant part of the collection was assembled during the first third of the 20th century, though collecting continued and new specimens were aquired. Among the well-known collectors of the past were G. Ossovsky, A. Ksenzhopolsky, G. Prozhyga, F. Nirod, M. Burchak, and V. Brukhovsky. Notable specimens include a mammoth skeleton, the remains of which were probably discovered in the late 19th century near the village of Zbranky (Ovruch Raion). Data on the growth dynamics of the collection are presented using the example of V. Brukhovsky’s zoological collection (1909–1968). A map is presented characterising the locations of this researcher’s collections in the Zhytomyr Oblast. Among contemporary collections, those of O. Voblenko, S. Vlasiuk, both authors, and some donors are particularly noteworthy. A map is presented characterising the museum’s collections within the territory of modern-day Zhytomyr Oblast. The current state of the collection is described, including recent developments regarding its relocation and changes in the museum’s status. The current collection comprises 296 specimens of 64 species from 7 orders. The current status of the collection is such that most of the taxidermy specimens are on display in a temporary exhibition, whilst the remainder, consisting mainly of osteological material, is currently in storage. |
