abstract

This article provides an overview of the emergence and development of theriological research in the Zhytomyr region. This region encompasses Polissia and the Forest-Steppe, and is characterised by varying degrees of research coverage regarding mammals. The important role of the Volhynia Researchers’ Society in the early stages of research is noted, as is the organisation and collection of mammal specimens by the Volhynia Central Research Museum, now known as the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local History. Attention is given to institutions that have carried out long-term research, the key one being the Polissia Nature Reserve. Information is provided on the most prominent researchers and their scientific activities, in particular G. Belke, A. Ksenzhopolsky, V. Skorokhod, V. Brukhovsky, K. Kopein, S. Zhyla, I. Zenina (Bolotina), I. Zagorodniuk, A. Guziy, O. Kratiuk, and P. Pecheniuk. Based on the works of both renowned scientists and amateurs, as well as materials from organisations and institutions, the main stages of research into the theriofauna of the Zhytomyr region are examined in chronological order, from the 19th century to the present day.
