abstract

The history of the study of fauna is connected with the history of economic development of the region. Faunal studies of southern Ukraine can be divided into three periods: descriptive, inventory (with species taxonomy), and monitoring. These periods do not have clear time limits and overlap with each other. The most intensive studies of flora and fauna, including theriological studies were carried out in the 1920s, the result of which was the creation of the Seaside and Sand Reserves, of which the Black Sea Reserve became a part. After the subordination of the Black Sea Reserve to the Academy of Sciences, theriological research acquired a more systematic direction and moved to a higher level. In addition to unsuccessful acclimatisation works, inventory studies, studies of biology and modern taxonomy of various groups of mammals, primarily rodents and protected species were conducted. The monitoring period of the study of mammals continues and studies cover issues related to the role of mammals in the ecosystems of the region and the impact of anthropogenic load on populations.
