abstract

An essay on a researcher of the steppe fauna, an unrivalled expert of nature and nature conservation. A graduate of Donetsk State University (1977–1982), during his studies he joined the ‘Friends of Nature’ movement, which shaped all his subsequent interests and life adventures. He has held various positions—forester, gamekeeper, research assistant at a local history museum, engineer and research assistant at a nature reserve, head of a landscape park conservation department, and senior research assistant at a national park. He is a specialist in the study of various groups of vertebrates, not just mammals. He is the author of over 40 articles, primarily on the status of populations and the biology of animals in protected areas, as well as the organisation of conservation measures to protect natural systems. He is currently a research fellow at the Homilshanski Lisy National Park.
