This essay outlines the scientific career of the Ukrainian-American palaeontologist Dr Irina Koretsky, an expert on fossil and extant pinnipeds, particularly phocids. Her research on seals started in the 1970s at the National Museum of Natural History, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Kyiv) and, since the early 1990s, continued at the Mote Marine Laboratory (Sarasota, FL) and then at the Smithsonian Institution and Howard University (Washington, D.C.). Irina Koretsky’s scientific contribution includes numerous publications on the phylogeny, taxonomy, ecomorphology, and zoogeography of pinnipeds. |
