Theriological and general zoological conferences in Ukraine: a brief overview

abstract

Scientific conferences in all their forms (seminars, workshops, congresses, meetings) have been a feature of every period in the development of zoological research in Ukraine. Five components are observed: (1) conferences of the 19th and early 20th centuries; (2) post-war conferences; (3) conferences of the independence era; (4) the period of theriological schools; (5) the current period of development of conference concepts. Among the conferences examined, the main focus is on those organised with the participation of theriologists or with high proportion of theriological contributions, including museological, hunting, and ecological meetings. Interest in mammals grew significantly during the period when the Ukrainian Theriological Society became active (1982) and the system of theriological workshops was developed (1993–2019), along with the publication of the corresponding collections of papers (1998–2026).
