Range dynamics in sibling species: facts and reconstructions for the mammal fauna of Eastern Europe

abstract

The peculiarities of the distribution of mammal fauna of Ukraine and adjacent countries from the composition of the polytypic complexes represented by pairs of sibling and morphologically close species are considered. The information on species distribution and the criteria for identifying part of these species by ancient collections have been developed to analyze changes in their geographical ranges. In particular, in a large number of cases, such data allow for reconstruction and formulation of appropriate hypotheses regarding the habitats of species in the region. Nine species complexes were considered, each of which distinguished and described the ranges of those species that, by direct or indirect data, demonstrate the dynamics of the boundaries of their distribution and thereby change the system of spatial relationships of species in their groups, mainly from the state of allopatry to marginal or significant sympathry. Such complexes include subspecies belonging to the former polytype species in their broad sense, including 4 former "large" bat species (Myotis mystacinus, Plecotus auritus, Eptesicus serotinus, Pipistrellus pipistrellus sensu lato) and 5 large species of rodent (Spermophilus suslicus, Terricola subterraneus, Microtus arvalis, Sylvaemus sylvaticus, Mus musculus sensu lato). For all these groups, distribution maps are presented with reconstructions of the directions of their expansion in the territory of the region (the territory of Ukraine and neighboring countries) and zones of prochoresis, where the present species are most likely absent in the recent past. Estimates of the time and rate of species expansion in the region have been made. The value of morphological criteria of species and possibilities of redefining of old collected specimens for analysis of long-time changes in biota, as well as importance of cartographic data for such analysis. Using re-identified data, it is possible to estimate geographical trends and speed of expansion for many species, including representatives of the groups with morphologically close and sibling species.
