abstract

The Natural History Museum of the Shevchenko Scientific Society is one of the first Ukrainian museums in Lviv, the creation of which was discussed in 1893. Despite the cessation of activity due to the war and insufficient funding, the museum resumed its work and the collections were enriched with zoopaleontological and zoological exhibits donated by patrons. Brief information about them is presented in the article. By 1939, the Shevchenko Scientific Society Museum’s zoological collection comprised around 9600 specimens. On 14 January 1940, the Natural History Museum of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and the Didushytsky Museum merged to establish the State Natural History Museum of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. A significant proportion of the collections, primarily palaeontological, were removed by the German occupying forces in 1944. The remaining part of the theriological collection is still preserved at the State Museum of Natural History of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
